Is Belgium the right registration?

Belgian registration is no longer a universal route for foreign owners. A genuine Belgian nationality, residence or qualifying company connection must be established.

The page therefore starts with eligibility. Historic marketing about an unrestricted Belgian flag should not be relied on for a new application.

Who can apply

Owner and vessel eligibility.

  • The owner must meet the current Belgian nationality, residence or qualifying-company rules.
  • The applicant's identity, address and ownership share are checked.
  • Imported, home-built and older boats may need additional construction, VAT or technical evidence.

Private and commercial use

The standard service is positioned for pleasure craft.

Commercial operation requires a separate Belgian and local operating assessment.

Navigation limits, safety equipment and insurance follow the vessel, design category and area of operation—not merely the registration certificate.

Can any nationality apply?

No. Current eligibility requires a Belgian nationality, residence or qualifying company connection.

How long is it valid?

Is a survey always required?

What about a home-built boat?

Construction invoices, a builder declaration, drawings and technical or insurance evidence may be needed.

Does registration prove EU VAT status?
